RIBA members' CPD obligations
Each year, you must have:
- 35 hours of CPD, at whichever learning level you require for the expertise you need
- 100 points which you give to all of your CPD activities, as a means of self-reflection
- At least half of your CPD activity, where possible, should be structured
- At least 20 hours of your 35 hours of CPD should be on Core Curriculum topics (at least two hours on each topic each year)
- A record of your CPD online using the RIBA's CPD recording manager.
The previous curriculum identified thirty-one topics to be covered over five years, whereas the new core requirement centres around ten key topics, at least two hours per topic per year:
- Being safe: health and safety
- Climate: sustainable architecture
- External management: clients, users, and delivery of services
- Internal management: professionalism, practice, business and management
- Compliance: legal, regulatory and statutory framework and processes
- Building procurement and contracts
- Designing and building it: structural design, construction, technology and engineering
- Where we live: communities, urban and rural design and the planning process
- Context: the historic environment and its setting
- Access for all: universal/inclusive design
Each of these ten topics is accompanied by detailed notes: these helpful notes are not mandatory. This extra information represents a holistic potential approach to competence in each topic. As such, this information acts as a potential study guide. You may pick and choose your CPD based on elements of that study guidance, or you may choose alternative paths in each topic. What you choose to study depends on what expertise you need.
